TRICARE Open Season: What Military Families Should Know

September 22, 2026 Insurance

If you have ever meant to switch your family from TRICARE Select to TRICARE Prime, or the other way around, and then realized you missed your chance, you already know why Open Season matters. Outside of a handful of life events, this is the one window each year when you can actually change your plan. Here is when it happens, what you can and cannot change, and how to avoid finding out too late.

What TRICARE Open Season Actually Is

Open Season is the annual period when beneficiaries enrolled in or eligible for TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select can enroll in a different plan, or make changes to existing coverage, for the upcoming plan year. For 2026, TRICARE Open Season runs Nov. 9 through Dec. 8, and changes you make during it take effect Jan. 1, 2027. Federal Benefits Open Season, which runs alongside it, ends later: Nov. 9 through Dec. 14, 2026.

Who Open Season Applies To

Open Season is relevant if you are:

  • An active-duty family member enrolled in or eligible for TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select
  • A retiree or retiree family member using TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select
  • Anyone weighing whether to add or drop TRICARE dental or vision coverage through FEDVIP for the year ahead

Active-duty service members themselves are automatically enrolled in TRICARE Prime and generally do not need to take action during Open Season for their own coverage, though it is still worth reviewing what it means for the rest of the family.

What You Can Change

During Open Season, per Military OneSource’s Open Season guide, you can generally:

  • Switch between TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Select
  • Enroll a family member who was previously not enrolled
  • Change your FEDVIP dental or vision plan, or enroll for the first time

Outside of Open Season, you generally cannot make these changes unless you have a Qualifying Life Event, such as PCS orders, a birth, a death, a marriage, or a divorce. If none of those apply to your family this year, Open Season is genuinely your only shot until next year’s window opens.

What Does Not Require Open Season

Not everything needs to wait. You can generally update these at any time, without waiting for Open Season:

  • Adding a new dependent after a Qualifying Life Event, such as a newborn
  • Updating your address or contact information in DEERS
  • Switching your primary care manager within your current plan, in many cases
  • Reporting other health insurance you have gained or lost

If you are not sure whether your situation counts as a Qualifying Life Event, your TRICARE regional contractor or your installation’s TRICARE service center can tell you before Open Season even opens, so you are not stuck waiting on a window you did not actually need.

A Few Reasons Families Actually Switch Plans

Every family’s situation is different, but a few common reasons come up:

  1. A PCS to a new area changes network availability, and a plan that worked well at your last duty station may not fit as cleanly where you are headed.
  2. A growing family sometimes shifts what matters more, network breadth versus lower out-of-pocket costs, for example.
  3. A spouse starting or leaving a civilian job can change whether other health coverage is available, which affects how TRICARE fits alongside it.
  4. Recurring specialty care needs may be easier to manage under one plan’s referral rules than another’s.

None of these guarantee that switching is the right move for your family. They are simply the kinds of changes worth revisiting once a year rather than locking in a decision made at a completely different stage of life.

Whatever you decide, it is worth checking that your broader family budget has room for whatever out-of-pocket costs your chosen plan carries, rather than discovering a gap the first time you need care under the new coverage.

TRICARE Prime and TRICARE Select, at a Glance

If you are trying to decide whether switching makes sense, the core structural difference between the two plans is worth keeping in mind:

TRICARE PrimeTRICARE Select
Primary careAssigned primary care manager, referrals generally needed for specialty careSelf-managed, you can generally see any TRICARE-authorized provider without a referral
Network flexibilityNarrower, built around military treatment facilities and a set networkBroader choice of civilian providers
Best fit whenYou want a coordinated, managed-care approach and are near a strong networkYou want more flexibility choosing providers, especially in areas with a thinner Prime network

This is a general structural comparison, not a substitute for reviewing the specific costs and network details for your situation through milConnect or your regional contractor before you decide.

How to Make Changes

Once Open Season opens, you can typically make changes through milConnect, by phone with your regional TRICARE contractor, or by mail. If you take no action at all during Open Season and are already satisfied with your current plan, you generally do not need to do anything, your existing enrollment carries forward. Action is only required if you actually want to change something.

Plan Ahead, Not During the Rush

Open Season lands in the same stretch of the calendar as the holidays and, for many families, PCS season wrapping up, so it is easy to let it slide. Building a quick review into your October financial planning check-in gives you a head start before the Open Season window actually opens, instead of trying to research plan differences during the busiest weeks of the year.

The Bottom Line

TRICARE Open Season is a short, easy-to-miss window that is your main chance each year to change your family’s health coverage without a qualifying life event to justify it. Mark Nov. 9 through Dec. 8, 2026 on your calendar, and use the time before it opens to decide whether your current plan still fits where your family is now. Frequently asked questions

What happens if I miss Open Season?

If you do not have a Qualifying Life Event, you generally have to wait until the next annual Open Season to make plan changes, so it is worth marking this year's window, Nov. 9 through Dec. 8, 2026, on your calendar.

Do I need to re-enroll every year even if I am happy with my plan?

No. If you are satisfied with your current TRICARE plan, your enrollment generally continues automatically, and you do not need to take any action during Open Season.

Does Open Season affect my SGLI or life insurance?

No, Open Season is specific to TRICARE and FEDVIP dental and vision coverage. SGLI and VGLI run on entirely separate timelines tied to your service status, not to Open Season.

Is Open Season the same for retirees and active-duty families?

The window is the same, but what applies to you depends on your enrollment. Retiree families using TRICARE Prime or Select follow the same Open Season rules as active-duty families in those plans.
